BUND / Friends of the Earth Germany & the European Environmental Bureau are co-hosting a lunchtime debate in Brussels to mark the release of BUND’s 2015 city ranking ‘Sootfree Cities’. ‘Sootfree Cities’ ranks over 20 major European cities, including London, Paris and Rome, according to improvements in air quality from transport policy measures.

Today cities must comply with EU air quality standards to reduce the negative effects of air pollution on human health and the environment. Although mayors can do a lot to improve local air quality, they need more help from the EU to reduce pollution at the source and the pollution which has drifted in from outside the city’s limits.

The event will also include a panel debate with MEPs, city representatives and NGOs about what should be done at city leval and what at EU level to improve air quality.
