Sustainable development in 2030: new talks for new goals
The world’s sustainability goals for 2030 are currently being debated at the United Nations HQ in New York, a key negotiation that will largely decide where development aid will flow over the next 15 years. But negotiations have gone almost completely unnoticed by the public.
After the Rio+20 conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil, the United Nations and national governments agreed to begin developing a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDGs are no longer simply homework assignments for developing countries. With the SDGs, industrialised and newly industrialising countries not only commit to pay for a world without poverty and reign in climate change, but also pledge to make the necessary changes to their domestic policies.
