The European Commission launched a publication to present its LIFE Programme for the Environment and Climate Change 2014-2020.

LIFE is the EU's funding programme for the environment and climate action for the period 2014-2020. It has been a useful tool for implementing climate change mitigation policy on the ground. However, in certain areas much more can be done, notably in terms of:

  • support for climate planning by local and regional authorities (LRAs);
  • helping promising low-emission technologies to market and helping them to succeed once they are there;
  • increasing uptake of climate-friendly farming practices and peatland restoration;
  • and supporting efforts to improve renewable energy infrastructure.

The LIFE programme now has an even-greater focus on climate change mitigation in the current EU programming period, thanks to the creation of the new sub-programme for Climate Action, with a budget of €864 million in co-financing for climate projects between 2014 and 2020.
